Nainital is located in the\u00a0Kumaon\u00a0foothills\u00a0of the outer\u00a0Himalayas\u00a0at a distance of 285\u00a0km (177\u00a0mi) from the state capital\u00a0Dehradun\u00a0and 345\u00a0km (214\u00a0mi) from\u00a0New Delhi, the capital of India. As\u00a0of the\u00a02011 Indian census, Nainital had a population of 41,377.<\/sup>\u00a0Males constitute 52.3% of the population and females 47.7%, which gives the town a\u00a0sex ratio\u00a0of 911 women per every 1000 men, which is less than the Uttarakhand state average of 963 women per every 1000 men. The population density was 3527.45 people per square km.<\/sup>\u00a0There were 9,329 housing units in the town at an average density of 795.31 households per square km.<\/sup> 9.54% of the population is under 6 years of age. In 2011, Nainital had an average literacy rate of 92.93%, higher than the Uttarakhand state average of 78.82% - around 96.09% males and 89.47% females in the town are literate. Hindi\u00a0is the official language,<\/sup>\u00a0while\u00a0Sanskrit\u00a0is the additional official language of the town.<\/sup><\/sup>\u00a0Kumaoni\u00a0is the native language and is the most spoken language in the town.<\/sup>\u00a0Hindi and English also serve as lingua franca between locals and tourists\/outsiders.<\/sup><\/p>\n

Nainital has historically been a part of the\u00a0Kumaon region. After the fall of\u00a0Katyuri Dynasty\u00a0in 10th century, Kumaon was divided into several small princely states, and the region around Nainital was under various branches of a Khasiya family.<\/sup>\u00a0The first dynasty to achieve consolidated dominance over Kumaon after the Katyuris was the\u00a0Chand dynasty, but it took many centuries and Nainital and its surroundings were one of the last areas to be absorbed.<\/sup>\u00a0Trilok Chand had built a fort at\u00a0Bhimtal in the thirteenth century.<\/sup><\/p>\n

Nainital town is represented in the\u00a0Lok Sabha, the lower house of the\u00a0Indian Parliament, by a\u00a0representative\u00a0elected from the\u00a0Nainital-Udhamsingh Nagar Constituency.\u00a0Ajay Bhatt (politician), from\u00a0BJP, is the current Member of Parliament from Nainital-Udhamsingh Nagar.<\/sup>\u00a0He won the\u00a02019 Indian general elections\u00a0by 3,39,096 votes against\u00a0Harish Rawat\u00a0from the\u00a0Congress, who was also the\u00a0former chief minister of the state.<\/sup>\u00a0Prior to the delimitation of the Loksabha Constituencies of Uttarakhand in 2008, the town was a part of the\u00a0Nainital Lok Sabha constituency.<\/sup>\u00a0Generally considered a Congress Stronghold, the Congress has registered a victory from Nainital eight times since 1951.<\/sup>\u00a0While the BJP has won this seat three times, several other political parties have also managed three victories.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
