Rishikesh<\/b>, also spelt as\u00a0Hrishikesh ,<\/b>Rishikesh is a city in India\u2019s northern state of Uttarakhand, in the Himalayan foothills beside the Ganges River. The river is considered holy, and the city is renowned as a center for studying yoga and meditation. Temples and ashrams (centers for spiritual studies) line the eastern bank around Swarg Ashram, a traffic-free, alcohol-free and vegetarian enclave upstream from Rishikesh town.<\/p>\n

Rishikesh \u00a0is a city governed by\u00a0Rishikesh Municipal Corporation\u00a0(since October 2017),<\/sup>\u00a0and a\u00a0tehsil\u00a0in\u00a0Dehradun district\u00a0of the Indian\u00a0state\u00a0Uttarakhand. Located in the foothills of the\u00a0Himalayas\u00a0in northern India, it is known as the \"Gateway to the\u00a0Garhwal Himalayas<\/i>\" and \"Yoga Capital of the World<\/i>\".<\/sup><\/sup><\/sup><\/sup>\u00a0It lies 21\u00a0km (13\u00a0mi) north of the city\u00a0Haridwar\u00a0and 45\u00a0km (28\u00a0mi) southeast of the state capital\u00a0Dehradun. As of 2021, Rishikesh tehsil has a total population of 322,825; this figure includes 93 surrounding villages as well as the city.<\/sup>\u00a0It is the seventh most populated city in the state of\u00a0Uttarakhand. It is known as the pilgrimage town and regarded as one of the holiest places for\u00a0Hindus.<\/sup>\u00a0Hindu sages and saints have visited Rishikesh since ancient times to meditate in search of higher knowledge.<\/sup><\/p>\n

Rishikesh has been a part of the legendary \"Kedarkhand\".<\/sup>\u00a0Legends state that Lord\u00a0Rama\u00a0did penance here for killing\u00a0Ravana, the\u00a0asura\u00a0king of\u00a0Lanka; and\u00a0Lakshmana, his younger brother, crossed the river\u00a0Ganges, using two jute ropes at the point where the present 'Lakshman Jhula' (\u0932\u0915\u094d\u0937\u094d\u092e\u0923 \u091d\u0942\u0932\u093e<\/span><\/span>) stands today.[20]<\/sup>\u00a0The 'Kedarkhand' of\u00a0Skanda Purana, also mentions the existence of Indrakund at this very point. The jute-rope bridge was replaced by a 248-foot long iron-rope\u00a0suspension bridge\u00a0in 1889. After it was washed away in the 1924 floods, it was replaced in 1927 by the present stronger bridge built by the United Provinces Public Works Department. This bridge connects the two districts of Tapovan, Tehri and Jonk, Pauri Garhwal. Another similar suspension bridge\u00a0Ram Jhula\u00a0was built in 1986 at nearby Sivananda Nagar.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
