At its core is the 6-sided Ghanta Ghar clock tower. To the southwest is Paltan Bazaar, a busy shopping area. Just east is the Sikh temple Gurdwara Nanaksar, topped with ornate white and golden domes. In Clement Town to the city\u2019s southwest, Mindrolling Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist center with shrine rooms in its Great Stupa.It is the third largest city in the\u00a0Himalayas\u00a0after\u00a0Kathmandu\u00a0and\u00a0Srinagar.<\/p>\n<p>Dehradun is located in the\u00a0Doon Valley\u00a0on the foothills of the\u00a0Himalayas\u00a0nestled between\u00a0Song river, a tributary of\u00a0Ganga\u00a0on the east and the Asan river, a tributary of\u00a0Yamuna\u00a0on the west. The city is noted for its picturesque landscape and slightly milder climate and provides a gateway to the surrounding region.<\/p>\n<p>The history of the city of\u00a0Uttarakhand, Dehradun (nicknamed \"Doon Valley\") is linked to the story of\u00a0Ramayana\u00a0and\u00a0Mahabharata. It is believed that after the battle between\u00a0Ravana\u00a0and Lord\u00a0Rama, Lord Rama and his brother\u00a0Lakshmana\u00a0visited this site. Also, known as 'Dronanagari' on the name of\u00a0Dronacharya, legendary Royal guru to the\u00a0Kauravas\u00a0and\u00a0Pandavas\u00a0in the epic Mahabharata, is believed to have been born and resided in Dehradun.<sup id=\"cite_ref-28\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Evidences such as ancient temples and idols have been found in the areas surrounding Dehradun which have been linked to the mythology of Ramayana and Mahabharata. These relics and ruins are believed to be around 2000 years old. Furthermore, the location, the local traditions and the literature reflect this region's links with the events of Mahabharata and Ramayana. Even after the battle of Mahabharata, the Pandavas had an influence on this region as the rulers of\u00a0Hastinapura\u00a0with the descendants of\u00a0Subahu\u00a0ruled the region as subsidiaries. Likewise,\u00a0Rishikesh\u00a0is mentioned in the pages of history when Lord\u00a0Vishnu\u00a0answered the prayers of the saints, slaughtered the demons and handed the land to the saints. The adjoining place called\u00a0Chakrata\u00a0has its historical impression during the time of Mahabharata.<\/p>\n<p>The city of Dehradun mainly lies in\u00a0Doon Valley\u00a0and is at a varying height from 410\u00a0m (1,350\u00a0ft) in\u00a0Clement Town to above 700\u00a0m (2,300\u00a0ft) at Malsi which is 15\u00a0km (9.3\u00a0mi) from the city. However, the average elevation is 450\u00a0m (1,480\u00a0ft) above sea level.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-elevation_38-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Malsi is the starting point of Lesser Himalayan Range that extends to Mussoorie and beyond.\u00a0Jaunsar-Bawar\u00a0hills in Dehradun district rises to 3,700\u00a0m (12,100\u00a0ft) above sea level. The hilly region of\u00a0Mussoorie\u00a0goes up to a height of 1,870\u20132,017\u00a0m (6,135\u20136,617\u00a0ft) above sea level. Its geomorphological and meteorological characteristics make it prone to a number of natural hazards.
