The largest of several sacred ghats (bathing steps), Har Ki Pauri hosts a nightly Ganga Aarti (river-worshipping ceremony) in which tiny flickering lamps are floated off the steps. Worshipers fill the city during major festivals including the annual Kanwar Mela.<span class=\"eHaQD\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>he city is situated on the right bank of the\u00a0Ganges\u00a0river, at the foothills of the\u00a0Shivalik ranges.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Haridwar is regarded as a holy place for\u00a0Hindus, hosting important religious events and serving as a gateway to several prominent places of worship. Most significant of the events is the\u00a0Kumbha Mela, which is celebrated every 12 years in Haridwar. During the\u00a0Haridwar Kumbh Mela, millions of pilgrims, devotees, and tourists congregate in Haridwar to perform ritualistic bathing on the banks of the Ganges to wash away their sins to attain\u00a0<i>moksha<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>In the scriptures, Haridwar has been variously mentioned as Kapilasthana, Gangadwara<sup id=\"cite_ref-sacred_9-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0and Mayapuri. It is also an entry point to the\u00a0Char Dham\u00a0(the four main centres of pilgrimage in Uttarakhand\u00a0<i>viz<\/i>,\u00a0Badrinath,\u00a0Kedarnath,\u00a0Gangotri, and\u00a0Yamunotri), hence,\u00a0Shaivaites\u00a0(followers of\u00a0Shiva) and\u00a0Vaishnavites\u00a0(followers of\u00a0Vishnu) call this place Hardwar and Haridwar respectively, corresponding to\u00a0Hara\u00a0being Shiv and\u00a0Hari\u00a0being Vishnu.<sup id=\"cite_ref-sacred_9-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-gaze_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-history_11-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Haridwar came under the rule of the\u00a0Delhi Sultanate\u00a0in 1206.<\/p>\n<p>The city also fell to the Central Asian conqueror\u00a0Timur Lang\u00a0(1336\u20131405) on 13 January 1399.<sup id=\"cite_ref-21\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>During his visit to Haridwar, first Sikh Guru,\u00a0Guru Nanak\u00a0(1469\u20131539) bathed at 'Kushawart Ghat', wherein the famous, 'watering the crops' episode took place,<sup id=\"cite_ref-22\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-23\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>his visit is today commemorated by a\u00a0gurudwara\u00a0(Gurudwara Nanakwara), according to two Sikh\u00a0Janamsakhis, this visit took place on the\u00a0Baisakhi\u00a0day in 1504 CE, he later also visited\u00a0Kankhal\u00a0en route to\u00a0Kotdwara\u00a0in\u00a0Garhwal. <sup id=\"cite_ref-janam_24-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Pandas of the Haridwar have been known to keep genealogy records of most of the Hindu population.
