A\u00a0Hindu\u00a0holy place, it is one of the four sites in India's\u00a0Char Dham\u00a0pilgrimage\u00a0and is also part of India's\u00a0Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. It gets its name from the\u00a0Badrinath Temple. Badrinath\u00a0was re-established as a major pilgrimage site by\u00a0Adi Shankara in the 8th century. In earlier days, pilgrims used to walk hundreds of miles to visit the Badrinath temple.<\/p>\n<p>The Badrinath area is referred to as Badari or Badarikaashram (\u092c\u0926\u0930\u093f\u0915\u093e\u0936\u094d\u0930\u092e) in Hindu scriptures. It is a place sacred to Vishnu, particularly in Vishnu's dual form of Nara-Narayana. Thus, in the\u00a0Mahabharata,\u00a0Krishna, addressing\u00a0Arjuna, says, \"Thou wast Nara in a former body, and, with\u00a0Narayana\u00a0for thy companion, didst perform dreadful austerity at Badari for many myriads of years.<\/p>\n<p>As of\u00a02011 Indian Census, Badrinath had a total population of 2,438, of which 2,054 were males and 384 were females. Population within the age group of 0 to 6 years was 68. The total number of literates in Badrinath was 2,265, which constituted 92.9% of the population with male literacy of 95.4% and female literacy of 79.7%. The effective literacy rate of 7+ population of Badrinath was 95.6%, of which male literacy rate was 97.1% and female literacy rate was 86.9%. The\u00a0Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes\u00a0population was 113 and 22 respectively. Badrinath had 850 households in 2011.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Census2011Gov_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Badrinath was re-established as a major pilgrimage site by\u00a0Adi Shankara\u00a0in the 8th century.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0In earlier days, pilgrims used to walk hundreds of miles to visit the Badrinath temple.<sup id=\"cite_ref-nilkantha_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The temple has been repeatedly destroyed by earthquakes and avalanches. As late as the\u00a0First World War, the town consisted only of the 20-odd huts used by the temple's staff, but the site drew thousands each year and up to 50,000 on its\u00a0duodecennial festivals (every twelve years).<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTE''EB''1911_8-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> In recent years its popularity has increased still more, with an estimated 600,000 pilgrims visiting during the 2006 season, compared\u00a0to 90,676 in 1961.<sup id=\"cite_ref-nautiyal_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0The temple in Badrinath is also a sacred pilgrimage site for\u00a0Vaishnavites.
