Gangotri Dham is the origin of the holy River Ganga, located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. It is one of the most revered pilgrimages in India, part of the famous Chhota Char Dham yatra (including Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath).<\/p>\n

Gangotri<\/b>\u00a0is a town and a\u00a0Nagar Panchayat<\/i>\u00a0(municipality) in\u00a0Uttarkashi district\u00a0in the state of\u00a0Uttarakhand, India. It is 99 km from\u00a0Uttarkashi, the main district headquarter. It is a\u00a0Hindu\u00a0pilgrim town on the banks of the river\u00a0Bhagirathi\u00a0\u2013 the origin of the\u00a0river Ganges. The town is located on the Greater\u00a0Himalayan Range, at a height of 3,100 metres (10,200\u00a0ft). According to popular Hindu legend,\u00a0Goddess Ganga\u00a0descended here when\u00a0Lord Shiva\u00a0released the mighty river from the locks of his hair.<\/p>\n

A temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga is located near a sacred stone where\u00a0King Bhagiratha\u00a0worshipped\u00a0Lord Shiva. According to Hindu culture, Goddess Ganga took the form of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagiratha's predecessors, following his severe penance of several centuries. Bhagiratha Shila is a sacred slab where king Bhagiratha meditated.\u00a0Ganga\u00a0is believed to have touched earth at this spot. According to another legend,\u00a0Pandavas\u00a0performed the great \u2018Deva Yagna\u2018 here to atone the deaths of their kinsmen in the epic battle of\u00a0Mahabharata.<\/b>\u00a0Hindus believe that performing the ancestral rites on the banks of Bhagirathi frees the spirit of the ancestor from the cycle of rebirth and a holy dip in its waters cleanses sins committed in the present also past births.<\/p>\n

The Gangotri temple opens on the auspicious day of\u00a0Akshaya Tritiya\u00a0which falls in the month of May and closes on\u00a0Yama Dwitiya\u00a0or\u00a0Bhai Dooj\u00a0which falls in the month of November. The Gangotri temple remains closed for the rest of six months. The Goddess shifts to the village\u00a0Mukhba\u00a0during the winter months. In the month of May,\u00a0Ganga Dussehra\u00a0is celebrated with great fanfare as the day of the birth of Ganga.<\/p>\n

According to the 2011 census of India, there are total 47 families residing in Gangotri. The total population of Gangotri is 110 out of which 97 are males and 13 are females. The literacy rate of Gangotri is 99.1%. The entire population of Gangotri identifies as Hindu.<\/sup><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
