Yamunotri<\/b>, also\u00a0Jamnotri<\/b>, is the source of the\u00a0Yamuna River\u00a0and the seat of the Goddess\u00a0Yamuna\u00a0in\u00a0Hinduism. It is situated at an altitude of 3,293 metres (10,804\u00a0ft) in the Garhwal\u00a0Himalayas\u00a0and located approximately 150 kilometers (93\u00a0mi) North of\u00a0Uttarkashi, the headquarters of the\u00a0Uttarkashi district\u00a0in the\u00a0Garhwal Division\u00a0of\u00a0Uttarakhand,\u00a0India. It is one of the four sites in\u00a0India's\u00a0Chhota Char Dham\u00a0pilgrimage. The sacred shrine of Yamunotri, source of the river Yamuna, is the westernmost shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas, perched atop a flank of Bandar Poonch Parvat. The chief attraction at Yamunotri is the temple devoted to the Goddess Yamuna and the holy thermal springs at Janki Chatti which is 7\u00a0km away.<\/p>\n

According to the ancient legend, sage Asit Muni had his hermitage here. All his life, he bathed daily both in the\u00a0Ganges\u00a0and the Yamuna. Unable to go to Gangotri during his old age, a stream of the Ganges appeared opposite Yamunotri for him.<\/p>\n

Sangya is the birthplace of the Yamuna in the Champasar Glacier (4,421 m) just below the Banderpoonch Mountain. The mountain adjacent to the river source is dedicated to her father, and is called Kalind Parvat, (Kalind being another name for the sun deity - Surya). Yamuna is known for her frivolousness, a trait that she developed because, according to a common story, Yamuna's mother could never make eye contact with her dazzling husband.<\/p>\n

Yamunotri Temple is situated in the western region of Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,235 metres (10,614\u00a0ft) near the river source.<\/sup> The temple was built in 1839 by Sundarshan Shah who was the king of the cultural center of Tehri.\u00a0There was a small shrine at the site prior to the construction of the temple. The Divya Shila and Surya Kund are located near the temple.<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
