Uttarakhand Janjati Mahotsav

Uttarakhand Janjati Mahotsav is the annual flagship event of the Uttarakhand Tribal Welfare Department to provide a platform to the exquisite art and craft by the artisans and craftsmen of the tribal community and act as a catalyst to their livelihood and promote their products amongst the urban community. It serves as a medium to uplift the tribal art and lifestyle.                         

The first edition of the Uttarakhand Janjatiya Mahotsav was organized by the State Tribal Research Cum-Cultural Centre and Museum (T.R.I.) in collaboration with Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India from 11th -13th November, 2021 with an objective to bring together the treasured culture of the FIVE TRIBAL GROUPS from Uttarakhand state viz. Bhotia, Raji, Buksa, Tharu and Jaunsari. The festival was inaugurated by Hon’ble Union Minister for Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Shri Arjun Munda and Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami.

The vibrant festival witnessed a large number of visitors who attended the Local Arts and Crafts Exhibition and welcomed engaging and enthusiastic participation by tribal communities of Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Orissa, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh and notable artists and craft persons from tribal areas of around 15 states of India. Displaying their creative arts, academic and cultural achievements, students from Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) of Uttarakhand also participated enthusiastically in the festival.

The event witnessed a gathering of over 150 exhibitors who displayed their tribal art and craft works through 50 stalls provided by the department at the venue and 300 performers who mesmerized the audience with their beautiful performances. The event had an average footfall of 1000 people each day during the three day event.

Artisans and craftsperson from Nagaland, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and other states displayed indigenous handmade products for sale. They showcased a variety of handicrafts, jewellery, winter wear collections, tribal fusion fashion, paintings, carpets, traditional medicines and more.

The remarkable cultural performances by the tribal artists on the occasion exuded the essence of Unity in Diversity of India.

Renowned artists like Kishan Mahipal, Govind Digari, Reshma Saha, Rajendra Chauhan enthralled the audience with their musical and cultural programme in the evening.

The success of Uttarakhand Janjatiya Mahotsav strengthened the government’s commitment to promote local art and crafts by indigenous artisans and craftsmen. The goods sold through the stalls provided at the venue generated good amount of revenue for the artisans and craftsmen. The event provided a platform for the tribal artists to promote their indigenous music and dance along with an opportunity to introduce their talent to the urban population which is least aware of the exquisite talent hidden in the farthest corners of the country awaiting recognition and opportunities.
